LEMONed

Sometime around 1995, hide came across a band by the name of Zeppet Store. hide liked Zeppet Store and their unique style of music, but like most bands of their type at the time, the diversity which made them so interesting to listen to was also their shortcoming; there was no chance of Zeppet Store ever being picked up by a major record label. hide felt this was a major drawback to the industry, because it hindered the progression of music by indirectly placing boundaries and limitations upon creativity and innovation. If a band wanted to succeed in being picked up by a major label, they had to conform to the popular sound and style that those labels were looking for at the time.

Despite having his own successful music career to be focusing on promoting, hide established his own label under the name of "LEMONed" that January of 1995. However, while hide originally created LEMONed to promote Zeppet Store and release their first album, he had bigger plans in store on a much grander scale for the label. hide wanted to promote diversity within the industry, but he was convinced that as a solo artist, his impact in that regard would be limited. X-Japan had shown hide that one band or artist's success could simply lead to one staple being adopted in the place of another. LEMONed, as hide envisioned it, was to become a major label for all types of aspiring bands and artists that had something unique to offer. To help LEMONed along, hide established his band Spread Beaver under the label later that year and released his second solo album - Psyence - that September.

However, like hide, LEMONed eventually became something un-definable; it's distinction as a record label becoming blurry (not that this was a bad thing). Additions were made to include a LEMONed fashion shop; complete with a sub-store for hide fans, with replicas of everything from popular hide outfits for cosplay, to hide's own popular custom-painted Les Paul guitar. hide went a step further to include a hair styling and design shop ("Squash"), and of course, hide fans just naturally flocked to LEMONed, so it eventually doubled as a central for all hide promotional and fan affairs. A radio station was also established in Tokyo to promote artists under LEMONed, as well as other unknown Indie bands.

LEMONed became a fashion shop, fan headquarters, radio station and record label all in one. What originally started simply as a small record company to help produce a Zeppet Store album eventually turned into hide's biggest and most aspiring project of all. hide had many plans for LEMONed, and with such optimism I doubt that anything could have stopped him from turning what he envisioned (a major international record label) into a reality; but unfortunately, hide's life was abruptly cut short before all of his plans for LEMONed could go into effect.

hide not only inspired a whole new generation, but since Zeppet Store he has brought attention to such artists and bands through LEMONed as Luna Sea, VINYL, shame, Kiyoshi, Chirolyn & The Angels, D.I.E. and others. Although hide is gone, LEMONed continues to breath life into the dream he had for music.
